Finding the Good

Lynn Miller

Lynn Miller

We've all seen good things come from tragedy. Sometimes, it's all a matter of perspective.

Lynn Miller is the kind of person who sees the glass as half full. He contributes to his community, volunteers his time, responds favorably when asked and finds ways to express his gratitude.

After graduating from Iowa State University, Lynn joined their staff as a computer programmer and worked there for 36 years, retiring in 2016 as Director of Information Systems in the Information Technology Services department. He met his longtime partner, Ellen Rasmussen, while singing in their church choir.

Nine years ago, Ellen was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through her year of treatment, Lynn was by her side every step of the way. Thankfully, after surgery and treatment at the William R. Bliss Cancer Center, she remains cancer free.

"After Ellen's experience at Mary Greeley, I felt I had to find a way to express my gratitude and say thank you for all that was done to help her beat the cancer and allow us to move forward with our lives knowing she received the best care possible," Lynn says.

Lynn's gratitude came in the form of annual support to the Foundation, as well as an estate gift that will one day help future patients, like Ellen, with cancer. He worked with his financial advisor to find the best plan for him and encourages others to do the same.

Although certainly Ellen's cancer was unexpected and unwelcomed, it opened Lynn's eyes to the excellent services, programs and quality care available at Mary Greeley. And, in true Lynn form—he found the good.

"We are all fortunate to have Mary Greeley Medical Center in our community," he says. "Not every Iowa community is as blessed as we are."

Like Lynn, your gratitude can save lives of future patients through an estate gift. To learn more, please contact Sarah Heineman at 515-239-2421 or heineman@mgmc.com.
