Generosity Leads to Lifetime Income

Joan Grabenstetter

In her retirement, Joan Grabenstetter, M.D., has made a gift that will one day pay her an income stream and also benefit Mary Greeley Medical Center.

In 2014, Joan Grabenstetter, M.D., retired from Obstetrics / Gynecology at McFarland Clinic after 33 years of dedicated service. In considering planned giving options, she settled on one that made the most sense for her — a deferred charitable gift annuity that will one day pay her an income stream and also benefit Mary Greeley Medical Center.

In exchange for the gift Dr. Grabenstetter made this past winter, the Foundation will make fixed payments to her for life beginning at a pre-selected age. The longer the deferral period and the older she is, the higher her payments will be. She has chosen to begin receiving quarterly disbursements in 2027.

A deferred gift annuity is a wonderful giving vehicle for someone who may not need funds immediately, but would like to enjoy an additional income stream in the future and possible tax benefits when the gift is made.

Dr. Grabenstetter has designated her generous gift to the Dr. Joe Rhoades Cancer Compassion Fund to help cancer patients and their families in need. The Rhoades Fund offers support beyond what the hospital is able to provide, including gas cards for those who travel far distances, overnight accommodations and special treatment-related needs.

Making a significant financial gift to Mary Greeley is not the only way Dr. Grabenstetter continues to serve the needs of patients and their families. She also gives of her time by volunteering at the medical center.

"Mary Greeley is a great hospital," she says. "We are blessed here with exceptional staff at all levels. I particularly admire the culture of continuous improvement! I tell people this hospital combines state-of-the-art care with being treated like a neighbor. I am happy to volunteer at Mary Greeley and provide for the hospital and future patients through my estate plan."
